Born in Salzburg, Christof Hetzer studied in Vienna with Erich Wonder.
Since 2001, he has been working as a sets and costumes designer for the Berlin Schaubühne, the Theater Basel, the Bayerische Staatsoper München, the Oper Frankfurt, the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Vlaamse Opera Antwerp.
He designed productions in collaboration with directors among others such as David Bösch (Das Wunder der Heliane in Antwerp), Hans Neuenfels (La Traviata) and Jan Philipp Gloger (as set designer for The Flying Dutchman at the Bayreuth Festival).​
Recent works with director Pierre Audi include Orlando at La Monnaie in Bruxelles, Gurrelieder at the Dutch National Opera, Rigoletto at the Vienna Staatsoper, Tristan und Isolde at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Parsifal at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Tosca at the Paris Opera, world premieres of Thebans by Julian Anderson at the English National Opera, György Kurtág's Fin de partie at the La Scala in Milan and the world premiere Die Liebenden by Manfred Trojan at Dutch National Opera.

With director Stefan Herheim he designed The Tales of Hoffmann at the Copenhagen Opera House and the Bregenz Festival, Offenbach's Barbe-bleue at the Komische Oper in Berlin, Wozzeck at Opernhaus Düsseldorf and Le Nozze di Figaro in Hamburg.

In 2016 at Salzburger Festspiele he designed The Tempest collaborating with director Deborah Warner.

He collaborates regularly with director Lotte de Beer, productions include: Jenufa at Theater an der Wien, Jommelli's Didone abbandonata in Basel, Don Carlos in Stuttgart, Alcina in Düsseldorf, Falstaff in Malmö and Aida at the Paris Opera.
